Add Rubrics to Items

Some items may require manual scoring using a rubric.

Legacy Item Editor

  1. From the main navigation menu, choose Items, then click New Item.
  2. Alternatively, you can search for the item, then click Edit for the respective item in the Results list.
  3. Select Instructions to add an instructions block to the item.
  4. Click within the Contents text field.

  5. Click Scoring Rubric.

Scoring Rubric is inactive until you click inside the instructions block.

  6. Enter search criteria, then press the Enter key.
  7. Optionally, you can select and enter items in the REFINE BY section to further narrow your search.
  8. Optionally, select a rubric to display a preview.
  9. Select the desired rubric.

  10. Click OK.

    • You can add multiple rubrics in one block; however, do not add duplicate rubrics within a single item.
    • You can only apply scores to a rubric once, and those scores are automatically applied to the duplicate rubric. To score each rubric independently, you must insert two unique rubrics or make two unique items with the rubric included.
  11. In the instructions block, select Scorer under Permissions.

To ensure that your manually-scored interaction correctly generates a scoring assignment for the test:

  • The rubric must be attached to the item.
  • The rubric must be within an instructions block.
  • Scorer permissions must be selected.

To adhere to QTI requirements, the instructions block containing the rubric cannot be nested within a table or another interaction block.

Redesigned Item Editor

  1. From the main navigation menu, choose Items, then click New Item (Redesigned).
  2. Alternatively, you can select the global search icon, then click Edit for the respective item in the Results list. Click Edit in Redesigned Editor.
  3. Enter the item Properties.

  4. Select Build.

  5. Select Instructions to add an instructions block to the item.
  6. Optionally, click Add Rubric to add a rubric for Draw, Extended Text, or Upload interactions.

  7. Use the filters to search for a rubric.
  8. Select the desired rubric.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Use the Permissions to choose who can display the instructions.

    • Scorer makes the rubric available when scoring items with manually scoreable interaction types.

    • Student makes the contents of the instruction block available to students when taking tests online.

  11. Click Save.
