Android Mobile App (Instructors)

Note:
  • The Schoology mobile app is designed to provide access to only certain features or settings. For features and settings not available on the app, you can use a computer or the browser on your device. 
  • Depending on the permissions set by your organization, you may or may not have access to certain areas of the mobile app. Reach out to your Support Contact for more information.

Sign Up

If you don’t already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Tap the app to open it on your device, and tap Sign up for Schoology.

To continue, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Instructor.
  2. Enter the following information for your profile:
        • First Name
        • Last Name
        • Email Address
        • Password
        • Confirm Password
  3. Complete the CAPTCHA to confirm you are not a robot.
  4. Check the box to agree to Schoology's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
  5. Tap Register to complete.


Note:
  • Enterprise schools may or may not allow a user to register on their own.
  • Signing up is dependent on how the Enterprise organization decides to add users to the system. The district administrators may decide to mass import users and provide login information separately.

Log In

If you already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Tap the app icon to open it on your device.

You can use an email address or username to log into the application, depending on how your account was set up.

Log in Through Your School (Enterprise)

Since many Enterprise schools have set up a custom login process, begin by selecting your school:

  1. Use the keyboard to enter the name of your school or organization. As you type, matching choices populate in the list. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should display.
  2. Tap the name of your school or organization when it displays.
  3. You can use an email address or username to log in to the application, depending on how your account was set up.
  4. Tap LOG IN to complete.

Single sign-on users will be directed to their school page after they choose their school on the application. They can log in with their SSO credentials on their school page. Schools using Google Single Sign-On must also tap LOG IN THROUGH YOUR SCHOOL on the next login screen after choosing their school on the application to continue to the SSO login page.

Any users at your organization who are not included in the SSO method should choose Log in through www.schoology.com.

If you sign in using an SSO and are using a shared device, be sure to log out of your account on the mobile browser when you log out of Schoology. For example, if you use a Google SSO, navigate to Google on a mobile browser and log out of your Google account. Logging out of Schoology will not log you out of your Google account.

Log in Through www.schoology.com

If you use the Basic version of Schoology or do not use an authentication service for your Enterprise organization, use this workflow to log in to the Android app.

  1. Tap CONTINUE.
  2. Enter your Email and Password.

    Note: If you log in with a username, use the login method Log in through your School.

  3. Tap LOG IN to complete.

If you log in with this method, you can reset your password by opening a mobile browser to app.schoology.com and using the Forgot my password link.

Navigation

Tap the navigation menu icon Image of the Navigation Menu Icon. to access the navigation menu.

From the navigation menu, you can access:

      • Your Profile
      • Messages
      • Notifications
      • Requests
      • Home
      • Courses
      • Groups
      • Resources
      • Grades
      • Calendar
      • People
      • Settings
      • Logout

Home

The Home area gives you quick access to the Recent Activity, Course Dashboard and Upcoming areas in Schoology. Based on your account Settings, either the Recent Activity area or the Course Dashboard displays as the first screen upon opening the Schoology Android app.

The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology home page. The Course Dashboard displays your courses in a tiled list. The Upcoming area displays all your upcoming items and events

Tap through the menu to switch between the three areas.

Recent Activity

The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology home page. To review additional posts, scroll on your screen.

At any point, you can update the Recent Activity feed by swiping down on the Recent Activity screen then releasing to refresh. To read additional posts, simply swipe upwards to scroll.

Create a New Comment

To reply to updates on the app with a comment:

  1. Tap Comment to reply to an update.
  2. Enter your comment.
  3. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  4. To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.
  5. Tap the Comment icon  to view comments on updates.

Like an Update or Comment

To add a Like to an update or comment, tap Like. You can remove your Like by tapping Unlike.

Delete an Update

To delete your update, tap on and hold the update. A pop-up will appear to either delete or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete an update that you have created.

Course Dashboard

The Course Dashboard displays all your courses in a tiled list. You can access the Course Dashboard from the menu on the Home screen.

Upcoming

From the Home screen, tap Upcoming to display all your upcoming items and events. The Upcoming area displays calendar events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions in chronological order by due date to help you locate and plan for upcoming activities. Tap on the item to access that item in Schoology.

Using the Quick Post Tool

The Schoology Android app Quick Post tool allows you to quickly create updates, assignments, discussions, and events from your Schoology home screen as from within courses and groups. Tap the + icon from the Recent Activity section to see these options:     

Create a New Update

You can create course, group, and personal updates from the Android application.

To create a new update:

  1. Tap +.
  2. Tap Update.
  3. Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
  4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
  5. Type your update.
  6. Optional: To attach an item to your update, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  7. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  8. To cancel your update, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Create an Assignment

  1. Tap +.
  2. Select Assignment.
  3. Tap Post to... and choose which course you would like to post the assignment.
  4. Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  5. Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  6. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  7. To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  1. Tap +.
  2. Tap Discussion.
  3. Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the discussion. You can select one or more locations.
  4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
  5. Enter a Title.
  6. Enter a Description.
  7. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  8. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  9. To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Create an Event

  1. Tap +.
  2. Select Event.
  3. Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the event.
  4. Optional: Select All Day Event.
  5. Enter the Date: When/End Date, Title, Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  6. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  7. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  8. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

You can also access this option from the Upcoming section.

Your Profile

Tap your name from the navigation menu to access your personal profile. These same areas also display if you access the profile of another user in the app.

Updates

The Updates tab of your profile displays updates you've posted on your personal profile. Tap + to add a personal update.

Info

Tap Info to access the information displayed on your user profile. To edit which information displays on your profile, go to Privacy Settings from your Account Settings.

  • Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to Privacy Settings.

Badges

Tap Badges from the menu of your profile to access badges you've been awarded in Schoology.

Note: The Blog and Portfolio sections of user profiles are not currently supported on the Schoology Android app. To access a user's blog or portfolio, log in to Schoology on a mobile browser.

Messages

Messages contain all received and sent mail in your Schoology account. You can access messages from the navigation menu. You can refresh, compose a new message, read sent messages, and reply to existing messages directly from this sub-menu. If you see an indicator next to Messages on the navigation menu, you have a new message. 

Inbox

The inbox displays the received messages by default. A dot indicates an unopened message. To read the message, tap the message you would like to open.

Sent

To read sent messages, tap Sent from the Inbox screen, then tap the message you would like to open.

Compose and Reply to Messages

From the Inbox or Sent screen, tap + to compose a message.

  1. Begin typing a name in the To field. The field will auto-populate with users to whom you may send mail. To select a user, tap their name from the list.
  2. Type the subject of the message.
  3. Type the content of the message.
  4. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  5. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  6. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

To reply to a message, open the message and tap the reply icon.
Note: Your school may or may not allow you to send messages to everyone in the school directory.

Notifications

The Notifications area displays course and group events in chronological order to keep you informed of Schoology activity. An indicator next to Notifications on the navigation menu means you have a new notification.

Email and Mobile Text Notifications

In addition to the menu notifications, Schoology sends you email and mobile text notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. In the Notifications area under Settings, you can manage which activity generates email or mobile text notifications.
Note: Email and mobile text message notifications differ from the Notifications menu located in the navigation menu. The notifications listed under the navigation menu are not customizable. They display information related to course and group events in chronological order to alert you to Schoology activity. 

Managing Email and Mobile Text Notifications

To change the email and mobile notifications that you receive:

  1. Log into the Schoology app.
  2. Select Settings from the navigation menu.
  3. Under Account Settings, tap Account Info.
  4. From there, select the Notifications tab.
  5. You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Email and Mobile column.
  6. Tap Save Changes to save.

Push Notifications

You can choose to receive a push notification on your Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group. Here are some examples of the types of occurrences our push notifications would relay:

  • Course update post
  • Group comments on updates and discussions
  • New assignment or discussion post
  • Receive a private message

When a notification arrives, if the app is closed, then you may see a banner or alert display on your screen. If the Schoology app is open, then the notification will be displayed on your screen. Tap the notification to take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.

Enabling Push Notifications

  1. Make sure you've downloaded the latest version of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play or the Amazon App Store.
  2. After installing the update and logging into the app, you will be prompted to enable notifications.
  3. Select OK, and you will be registered for notifications.

Disabling Push Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, disable notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately. 

Re-Enabling Push Notifications

To re-enable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, enable notifications.
  4. As a final step, you will need to close the Schoology app completely from the background if it is there, and then restart the app.
  5. You will now start receiving notifications. 

Requests

The Requests area lists all of the connections, course, and group requests, that are associated with your Schoology profile. Tap Accept or X, depending on the action you would like to take for each item. An indicator next to Notifications on the navigation menu means you have a pending request.

Courses

Courses lists all of the courses for which you are a member. You can also join a course from this area. 

Join Courses

To join an existing Course:

  1. Tap Courses from the navigation menu.
  2. Tap +.
  3. Enter the Course Access Code.
  4. Tap Join.

The format of the course code should be XXXXX-XXXXX (10 digits). Once you join a course, you will begin receiving updates, grades, comments, and material notifications from the course. Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have permission to join Courses via Course Access Codes.

Tap Courses from the navigation menu to access a list of all the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a course section, tap the name from the list. Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Materials (Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, Albums, Pages)
  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Gradebook
  • Attendance

Materials

You can access course content from the Materials area, including Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, and Pages. To access any of the materials tap the name of the item.

You can create new Assignments and Discussions from the Materials area:

Create an Assignment

  • Tap +.
  • Select Assignment.
  • Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  • Tap Show more to include grading options:
    • Max Points
    • Grading Category
    • Grading Period
    • Grading Scale
    • Set as midterm/final
    • Enable Submissions (enabled by default)
  • Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon to complete.
  • To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  • Tap on the + icon.
  • Tap Discussion.
  • Enter a Title.
  • Enter a Description.
  • Enter a Due Date.
  • Tap Enable Grading to enter the following options:
    • Max Points
    • Grade Category
    • Grading Period
    • Grading Scale
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon to complete.
  • To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Updates

Course updates show the Recent Activity for a particular course section.

Create a Course Update

To create a course update follow these steps:

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Update.
  • Write an update.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your update, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon  in the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your update, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Upcoming

Access upcoming items and create calendar events for a particular course.

Create a Course Event

  • Tap +.
  • Select Event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.
  • Enter the Date: When/End Date, Title, Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon to complete.
  • To cancel your event, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

Gradebook

The Gradebook displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Period grades by grading category.

View Final Grades

From the Gradebook, tap More, then select View Final Grades.

View Submissions and Add or Edit Grades

Tap the title of the Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment or Discussion to review the graded item. To review submissions and add or edit grades:

  1. Tap the item you want to grade.
  2. Tap Grades/Submissions from the menu under the item title.
  3. Select the student by tapping their name.
  4. Tap the Submissions sub-menu to view submissions.
  5. Use the slider to provide a score for the submission.
  6. Optional: Provide a comment and check the box to Display comment to student.
  7. Tap the checkmark to post the grade.


Grades will not display for grading periods that have not yet started. Graded items without a grading period will populate under the appropriate grading category under No Grading Period.

Attendance

View and enter attendance by tapping Attendance from the menu. 

To enter attendance:

  1. Tap the cell next to each student to enter attendance for a particular day.
  2. Tap Save Changes to complete.

Groups

The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. You can also join a group from this area.

Join Groups

To join an existing Group:

  1. Tap Groups from the navigation menu.
  2. Tap +.
  3. Enter the Group Access Code.
  4. Tap Join.

The format of the group code should be XXXX-XXXX (8 digits). Once you join a group, you will begin receiving updates, posts, comments, and event notifications from the group. 

Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have permission to join Groups via Group Access Codes.
Tap Groups from the navigation menu to access a list of all the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a group, tap the name from the list. Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular group:

  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Discussions
  • Albums
  • Resources

Tap and swipe through the menu under the group title to access these items.

Group Updates

Group updates show the Recent Activity for a particular group. 

Group Upcoming

Access Upcoming events for a particular group. 

Group Discussions

Group Discussions displays the discussions associated with the group. You can tap on a discussion to review, post, and reply to comments.

Group Albums

Group albums display the media albums associated with the group.

Group Resources

Group Resources displays the materials and resources associated with the group.

Only the following items are accessible from the mobile app:

  • Files
  • Links

All other items are listed as templates in Resources and can be accessed via the mobile browser or web browser.

Resources

Tap Resources from the navigation menu to access your existing Resources and Collections. 

Only the following items are accessible from the mobile app:

  • Files
  • Links

All other items are listed as templates in Resources and can be accessed via the mobile browser or web browser.

Grades

The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. The following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Midterm/Final grades
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades with no grading period

To access the grades for a course section, tap Grades from the navigation menu, and then the section of your choice. After you tap the course section, choose More to access Final Grades.

Add or Edit Grades

You can access graded items by tapping on the title of the Test/Quiz, Assignment, or Discussion. To add or edit grades:

  1. Tap the title of the graded item.
  2. Tap Grades/Submissions from the menu under the item title.
  3. A list of the course members will appear. Tap the member's name to add or edit the grade.
  4. Tap the Submissions sub-menu to review submissions.
  5. Use the sliding bar to enter a point value.
  6. Optional: Provide a comment and check the box to Display comment to student or uncheck the checkbox to keep the comment only available to you.
  7. Tap the checkmark to save.
  8. Repeat these steps for each student in the course.

Note: Grades will not display for grading periods that have not yet started. Graded items without a grading period will populate under the appropriate grading category under No Grading Period.

Calendar

Tap Calendar from the navigation menu to access your calendar. The Calendar area displays all of the events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions that are associated with your Schoology profile in a day-to-day Upcoming events list as well as a traditional month-by-month Calendar screen.

Create an Event

  1. Tap +.
  2. Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the event.
  3. Optional: Select All Day Event.
  4. Enter the Date: When/End Date, Title, Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  5. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  6. Tap the Post icon to complete.
  7. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon or tap Back on your device.

People

The People area allows you to review your School Directory and Network. Tap Directory to access a list of all the members in your school in alphabetical order by last name. To display a member profile, simply tap the person's name.
Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to review the school directory or a network of connected users.

Settings

The Settings area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

Notification Settings

  • Notifications: Enable push notifications to your device.
  • Ringtone: Set notification ringtone.
  • Vibrate: Vibrate on incoming notifications.
  • Phone LED: Flash LED on notifications (Depends on your device's model and permissions).

Account Settings

Account Info

The Account Info area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

Account Settings

Account Settings allows you to change and update your personal information as well as Merge Accounts.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email and mobile text notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. 

Privacy Settings

Privacy Settings allows you to select who can access and search for your information.

Offline Storage Settings 

Schoology materials can be downloaded for offline access on your Android device.

Log Out

The Logout option is located on the navigation menu. You may log out at any time by tapping the navigation icon. Logout is the last option on the navigation menu.
You will stay logged in until you manually log out or uninstall the application. Quitting the app will not automatically log you out.

App Permissions

Use Settings on your device to allow Schoology to access various built-in features such as Camera and Files. If you previously denied access to the camera or files, you can change the permissions from this area.
