Score Calculation Methods

The Score Calculation Method defines the relationship between the overall assignment score and the parts of the assignment you assess. Select the method when you create or edit an assignment.

Here are some examples of the different methods for an assignment with an overall score and three parts to assess. The parts of an assignment may be either standards or criteria.

Score Calculation TypeWhat the Teacher DoesScore ExampleCalculation Example
Score separatelyScores the overall assignment, and separately assesses the parts.

Oral Report assignment has three types of standards or teacher-defined criteria (parts) to assess.

Scores are entered separately for each part and the overall assignment score.

In this example, parts are scored using a 1-4 scale.

An example of the ability to score parts of the assignment separately appears on the score page.
Weighted standards to assignment scoreWeighs the parts, scores them, and the overall score is automatically calculated.

Oral Report assignment has three types of standards or teacher-defined criteria (parts) to assess.

Weights are assigned to each part.

Scores are entered for each part, and the overall score is calculated based on the weight of the parts and the total points possible on the assignment.

In this example, parts are scored using a 1-4 scale.

An example of the ability to assign weights to each part of the assignment appears on the score page.

Standards points for assignment score

Assigns points to each part, scores them, and the overall score adds up the points (and adjusts if necessary).

Oral Report assignment has three types of standards or teacher-defined criteria (parts) to assess.

Total available points are assigned to each part.

Scores are entered for each part, and the overall score is calculated based on the scores and the total points possible on the assignment.

If the overall score points possible is set to greater than the total points possible from the parts, the calculation will adjust to that setting. In the example provide, if the overall points possible were 50, the score will adjust to 48/50.

In this example, parts are scored using points, not 1-4 scale.

The score page shows an example of the ability to enter scores for each part of the assignment and an overall score being calculated based on those scores.

Assignment score for standards scoresScores the overall assignment. That score is used to calculate the parts.

Oral Report assignment has three types of standards or teacher-defined criteria (parts) to assess.

Score is entered for the overall assignment. The score for each part (standard or criteria) is calculated based on the overall score.

In this example, the score for each part is calculated using a 1-4 scale.

The score page shows an example of an overall score that has been entered for the assignment and the individual scores for each part being generated based on that overall score.
